TAP Active Youth

In august 2020, TAP and community partners  (KYSO/MGTYouth/A3access) organised a trip for 20 young people to attend an outdoor activity centre in Eccles, where they took part in a variety of fun pursuits such as quad biking, archery & axe throwing. From this first trip, T.A.P Active Youth Programme was born. A Patagonia year long funded project, in response to young people who experienced trauma through youth/violence in our community. Our team took up to 20 underserved young people to take part in adventurous activities such as indoor rock climbing, outdoor mountain biking and hiking.

The project also encouraged reflection, mindfulness and creative writing to capture and track positive changes and culminates in a celebration event at the Patagonia store in manchester where young people will present their journeys to an audience of their peers, parents, dignitaries.

Young people have reported feeling more stable, safe & able to speak their truths, as well as having more points of community support to go too.

  • ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!’
  • ‘It helped with mental health, like getting out of the house, doing something that’s challenging’.
  • ‘I’d defo do it again, tell a hundred of my friends to do it, it’s amazing’.
They have stated that they are more likely to travel independently, have been exposed to new ways of expressing their feelings and the joint working with other youth work practitioners in manchester has increased partnership working between organisations.
